Private Day Tour
A full-day private excursion to explore ancient Roman ruins and hike to the crater of Mount Vesuvius

Our Vehicles
The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD was one of history's most catastrophic volcanic events, yet it inadvertently created one of the world's greatest archaeological treasures. The ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum were buried under metres of ash and volcanic mud, preserving their streets, buildings, artwork and even the daily lives of their inhabitants in astonishing detail. Today, these UNESCO World Heritage Sites offer an unparalleled window into the Roman world, and a private tour is the best way to experience them.
Pompeii was a thriving commercial city of approximately 20,000 people when Vesuvius erupted. Walking through its excavated streets, you can see the forum where citizens gathered, the bakeries where bread was baked, the thermopolium (ancient fast-food counters), the amphitheatre that seated 20,000 spectators, and the remarkably preserved frescoes in the Villa of the Mysteries. A licensed guide can bring these ruins to life with stories of daily Roman life, and we highly recommend arranging one for your visit.
While Pompeii gets the headlines, Herculaneum (Ercolano) is often considered even more impressive by archaeologists and visitors alike. This smaller, wealthier seaside town was buried under volcanic mud rather than ash, which preserved organic materials that did not survive in Pompeii — including wooden beams, furniture, food and even papyrus scrolls. The site is less crowded than Pompeii and can be explored in about 1.5 hours. If time allows, we strongly recommend adding Herculaneum to your itinerary.
The climax of the day is the hike to the crater of Vesuvius itself. The drive up the mountain takes you through fertile volcanic soil covered in vineyards and orchards. From the car park at 1,000 metres elevation, a well-maintained gravel path leads to the crater rim at 1,281 metres. The walk takes about 25 to 30 minutes at a leisurely pace. At the top, you peer into the still-active crater with its wisps of steam, and are rewarded with a 360-degree panorama encompassing the Bay of Naples, Capri, the Sorrento Peninsula and the Amalfi Coast.
One of the most popular options is to combine this tour with an airport transfer. If you are arriving at or departing from Naples Airport, we can incorporate a visit to Pompeii and Vesuvius into your transfer journey. This is an excellent way to make the most of your travel day without losing time at the archaeological sites. Contact us to discuss combined transfer and tour packages.

FAQ
The full-day tour lasts approximately 8 to 9 hours, including pickup and return to your accommodation. This allows ample time to explore Pompeii (2 hours), optionally visit Herculaneum (1.5 hours), enjoy a leisurely lunch, and hike to the Vesuvius crater (1.5 hours).
Your driver provides commentary and local knowledge throughout the day, but is not a licensed archaeological guide. We can arrange a professional licensed guide for Pompeii and Herculaneum at an additional cost of approximately €150-180 for a 2-hour tour. We highly recommend this for the richest experience.
The hike to the Vesuvius crater is moderate. It is approximately 1 kilometre uphill on a well-maintained gravel path with handrails in steeper sections. Most people, including older visitors and children over 5, can complete it in about 25 to 30 minutes. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended.
Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip, especially for Vesuvius. Dress in layers as it can be cooler and windy at the crater summit even in summer. Bring sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water in warm months. In winter, a warm jacket is essential for the Vesuvius hike.
No, entrance tickets to Pompeii (€18), Herculaneum (€13) and Mount Vesuvius (€10) are not included in the tour price and must be purchased separately. We can help you pre-book tickets online to avoid long queues, especially during high season (April to October).
Absolutely. The tour is fully flexible and can be tailored to your interests. You can choose to visit only Pompeii and Vesuvius, skip Herculaneum, add a winery visit on the slopes of Vesuvius, or adjust the timing. Just let us know your preferences when booking.
Your driver will recommend excellent local restaurants near Pompeii or on the slopes of Vesuvius. Options range from casual family-run trattorias to more upscale restaurants, many offering traditional Neapolitan cuisine with views over the bay. Lunch cost is not included in the tour price.
