Maiori Beach holds a unique distinction along the Amalfi Coast: it is the longest sandy beach on this entire celebrated stretch of shoreline. While Positano, Amalfi, and the other iconic towns are known for their small pebbly coves and narrow strips of shore, Maiori offers a broad, welcoming expanse of sand that stretches for nearly a kilometer. For families, sunbathers, and anyone who prefers a proper beach day alongside their coastal sightseeing, Maiori is an essential destination.<\/p>\n
Most beaches on the Amalfi Coast are composed of coarse pebbles or small stones, a geological reality shaped by the steep limestone cliffs that plunge into the sea. Maiori is the exception. Thanks to the alluvial deposits carried down from the Tramonti valley by the Reginna Major river, the beach here features fine golden sand mixed with lighter gravel, creating a surface that is far more comfortable for lounging and playing than the rocky alternatives found elsewhere on the coast.<\/p>\n
The beach curves gently along the waterfront promenade known as the Lungomare, backed by a row of restaurants, cafes, gelato shops, and small hotels. Maiori Beach is divided into sections of both private stabilimenti (beach clubs) and free public access areas. The private lidos offer sunbeds, umbrellas, changing rooms, showers, and sometimes bar service brought directly to your chair. Prices are generally more reasonable than at comparable facilities in Positano or Amalfi, making Maiori an excellent value for a full day at the beach.<\/p>\n
The free sections of the beach are well-maintained and provide a perfectly good alternative if you bring your own towel. Public showers are available at several points along the Lungomare.<\/p>\n
The waters off Maiori Beach slope gently into the sea, making this one of the most family-friendly swimming spots on the entire coast. The gradual entry is ideal for young children and less confident swimmers, in contrast to the deeper and sometimes rocky entries found at many other Amalfi Coast beaches. The water is typically clear and calm, though like all beaches on this stretch of coast, conditions can become rougher when winds blow from the south or southwest.<\/p>\n
During the peak summer months of July and August, the water temperature reaches a very pleasant 25 to 27 degrees Celsius. The swimming season extends from late May through October for most visitors, though locals are often in the water by April.<\/p>\n
Maiori itself is a charming town that receives far fewer international tourists than its more famous neighbors. This gives it a pleasantly authentic atmosphere, with a genuine Italian character that sometimes gets overshadowed in the more heavily visited villages. Perched above the town, this church is famous for its spectacular majolica-tiled dome, which gleams in the sunlight and is visible from far out at sea. The interior houses a notable wooden ceiling and a venerated 13th-century wooden statue of the Madonna. The church is free to visit and offers fine views from its elevated position.<\/p>\n
The tower at the eastern end of the beach dates to the medieval period and was part of the chain of watchtowers that once defended the coast against Saracen raids. From here, a path leads along the rocky shoreline toward the neighboring village of Minori, a pleasant 15-minute walk that passes through quiet stretches where the only sounds are the waves and the cicadas.<\/p>\n
