Rome to Positano: Your Journey Guide

The Route from Rome to Positano

The journey from Rome to Positano covers approximately 280 km and takes about 3 hours. Your driver takes the A1 motorway (Autostrada del Sole) heading south from Rome, passing through the beautiful Campanian countryside. After about 2 hours, you reach the area around Naples, where the A1 connects with the A3 motorway heading south toward Salerno.

At Castellammare di Stabia, the route exits the motorway and crosses the Lattari Mountains through the Sorrento Peninsula. The final 20 minutes are spent on the famous SS163 Amalfi Coast road — one of the most scenic drives in the world, with hairpin turns carved into cliffs high above the Mediterranean.

Stopping at Pompeii

The archaeological site of Pompeii is located along the route from Rome to Positano, about two-thirds of the way. Adding a 2-hour stop at Pompeii is one of the most popular options for this transfer. You can explore the remarkably preserved ancient Roman city, buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, and then continue your journey to Positano with unforgettable memories.

Private Transfer vs. Train from Rome

The high-speed Frecciarossa train from Rome Termini to Naples Centrale takes about 1 hour 10 minutes. However, from Naples you still need to reach Positano — either by a second private transfer (75 min), a combination of the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento and then a SITA bus (3+ hours), or a taxi. When you factor in the wait times and luggage handling, the total train journey takes similar time to a direct private transfer.

A private transfer from Rome to Positano eliminates all connections. One vehicle picks you up and drops you at your destination. For families with children and luggage, this is by far the most practical option.

Pickup from Rome Airports

Fiumicino Airport (FCO): Italy’s largest airport, located 30 km southwest of Rome. Your driver meets you at the Arrivals hall with a name sign. The drive to Positano takes approximately 3 hours.

Ciampino Airport (CIA): Rome’s secondary airport, used mainly by low-cost carriers. Located closer to the A1 motorway, the drive to Positano is about 2 hours 45 minutes.

The train from Rome to Naples takes about 1 hour 10 minutes on the high-speed Frecciarossa, but from Naples you still need another transfer to Positano (75 min). For 1-3 passengers we use a Mercedes E-Class luxury sedan. For 4-7 passengers we use a Mercedes V-Class premium minivan. Both are air-conditioned with leather interiors, offer complimentary water, USB charging, and plenty of luggage space. The ride is comfortable even for a 3-hour journey.

The price is always per vehicle. Whether you are 1 or 3 passengers in an E-Class, the price is the same. For the V-Class, the price is the same for 1 to 7 passengers. This makes private transfers very cost-effective for families and groups.
