The area around Mount Vesuvius is home to three of the most extraordinary archaeological and natural sites in the world. Pompeii, the famous Roman city frozen in time by the eruption of 79 AD, is one of Italy's most visited attractions. Herculaneum, smaller but remarkably better preserved, offers an intimate look at Roman daily life with intact wooden beams, mosaics, and even carbonized food. And towering above them both is Mount Vesuvius itself — the only active volcano on mainland Europe, with a crater you can walk up to and peer inside.

With a private day tour, you can combine two or all three of these sites in a single day. Your English-speaking driver picks you up at your hotel in Positano, Sorrento, Naples, or anywhere along the coast, and takes you on a fully customizable journey through 2,000 years of history. No group schedules, no rushing — you set the pace.

Typical Itinerary

Morning: Pompeii

Your driver picks you up at your hotel between 8:00 and 9:00 AM. From the Amalfi Coast, the drive to Pompeii takes approximately 1 hour. You arrive at the archaeological site before the main crowds and spend 2 to 2.5 hours exploring the ancient streets, the Forum, the amphitheatre, the villas with their frescoes, and the plaster casts of Vesuvius's victims.

Late Morning: Mount Vesuvius

From Pompeii, your driver takes you up the winding road to Mount Vesuvius (approximately 30 minutes). At the parking area (altitude ~1,000 m), you begin the moderate hike to the crater rim — about 30 minutes uphill on a gravel path. At the top, you look directly into the crater of the volcano that destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum. The views over the Bay of Naples are breathtaking. Allow about 1 hour for the round trip.

Lunchtime

Your driver can recommend excellent local restaurants near Pompeii or on the slopes of Vesuvius. Enjoy a traditional Neapolitan meal — perhaps wood-fired pizza, fresh seafood, or pasta with local wines — before continuing your tour.

Afternoon: Herculaneum (Optional)

From Vesuvius, Herculaneum is just a 20-minute drive. This smaller but superbly preserved site offers a very different experience from Pompeii: two-story houses with original wooden balconies, stunning mosaics, a Roman bath complex, and even a boat house where skeletons of those who tried to flee were discovered. Allow 1.5 hours for a thorough visit.

Return

Your driver takes you back to your hotel, arriving between 5:00 and 6:00 PM depending on the itinerary. Along the way, enjoy the coastal views and reflect on a day spent walking through 2,000 years of history.

About the Sites

Pompeii

The most famous archaeological site in the world, Pompeii was a thriving Roman city of around 11,000 people when it was buried under volcanic ash in 79 AD. Today you can walk its ancient streets, enter houses with intact frescoes, visit the Forum, and see the haunting plaster casts of the eruption's victims. Entrance fee is approximately €18 per person. Allow 2 to 3 hours for a visit.

Herculaneum

Smaller and less crowded than Pompeii, Herculaneum was a wealthy seaside town that was buried under a pyroclastic flow rather than ash. This means organic materials like wood, cloth, and food were preserved in extraordinary detail. You can see original wooden doors, second-floor balconies, and intricate mosaics that have survived nearly 2,000 years. Entrance fee is approximately €13 per person. Allow 1.5 hours.

Mount Vesuvius

The only active volcano on mainland Europe, Vesuvius last erupted in 1944 and is closely monitored today. The hike to the crater rim takes about 30 minutes on a well-maintained gravel path. At the top, you can peer into the 300-metre-deep crater and enjoy panoramic views stretching from Naples to the islands of Capri and Ischia. Entrance fee is approximately €10 per person. Comfortable walking shoes are essential.

Licensed Guides

While your driver is knowledgeable about the area and its history, for a deeper experience at Pompeii or Herculaneum we can arrange a licensed archaeological guide. Guides are available in English, French, German, Spanish, and other languages. This service is not included in the tour price and is arranged on request.

The full-day tour typically lasts 8 to 10 hours, depending on how many sites you visit and how much time you spend at each one. Your driver is with you for the entire day, so the pace is entirely up to you.

The price includes your private driver, luxury Mercedes vehicle, fuel, motorway tolls, and parking fees. Entrance tickets to Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Vesuvius are NOT included and are paid directly at each site. Licensed guides are also available on request at an additional cost.

Yes, with good planning it is possible to visit Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Mount Vesuvius all in one day. We recommend starting early (8-9 AM) and prioritizing the sites that interest you most. Most guests choose two of the three for a more relaxed experience.

We pick up from any hotel, B&B, or villa in Positano, Praiano, Amalfi, Ravello, Sorrento, Naples, and surrounding areas. Just tell us your accommodation and we will be at your door.

The walk to the crater of Vesuvius is a moderate hike of about 30 minutes uphill on a gravel path. It is suitable for most fitness levels, though it can be slippery in wet weather. Comfortable shoes are recommended. The summit is at about 1,280 metres altitude.

The tour runs year-round. Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) offer the best weather and smaller crowds. Summer is hot but the sites are fully accessible. Winter has fewer tourists but some areas may have reduced hours.

Absolutely. Children are fascinated by the ancient cities and the volcano. We provide child seats for the car journey, and the sites are generally accessible for families. Just note that the Vesuvius hike may be tiring for very young children.

Of course. Your driver knows excellent local restaurants near Pompeii and on the slopes of Vesuvius. A traditional Neapolitan lunch with local wine is a wonderful addition to the day. Just let us know your preferences.
